Duplomatic MS visit to Daikin Yodogawa Plant in Osaka and Technology Innovation Center
Last September 2022, Paolo Leutenegger, Duplomatic MS General Manager and Massimo Ripamonti, Duplomatic MS Hydraulic Systems BU Technical Director were welcomed on a visit to the Daikin Yodogawa Plant in Osaka, Japan.
Yodogawa plant covers an area of 4 km² that houses the Technology Innovation Center, the flagship of Daikin and a production site where Daikin develops chemical products, mainly for air conditioning, in addition to the production plants dedicated to the hydraulics and to the business of pump valves and chillers for hybrid products.
The Technology Innovation Center is an investment made in 2015 for 270 million euros. It is a six-floor building that is completely neutral from the point of view of environmental impact and energy independent. It represents one of the concrete steps to achieve Daikin's goal of being a completely CO2 neutral company by 2030. This challenge also involves Duplomatic as part of Daikin: in the next seven years we will be committed to achieving this goal.
Within the Technology Innovation Center people work according to the "Open Innovation" paradigm that manages innovation in a new way, based on openness, as opposed to research laboratories traditionally oriented to the secrecy of R&D. The Technology Innovation Center supports Daikin's expansion and development internationally, actively promoting global dialogue and cooperation with industry, governments, and academia, and attracts engineers, research institutes and new technologies from around the world.
This approach is reflected in the organization and mindset to facilitate sharing and development of ideas, creativity and carry out a real innovative research and development. The whole building has been designed to facilitate this circulation of projects, successes, and experiences.
The Waigaya Stage, for example, is an area located in the center of the building that bears an evocative name in Japanese. The term expresses the noise, the sound, which is generated by a large group of people working closely together in an open and collaborative space.The name, invented by Honda years ago, expresses the creative tension present in Daikin, which comes from a continuous exchange of results and experiences for common growth.
Those who work in the Technology Innovation Center can make all the working groups in other areas feel what they are doing and make mentally available ideas and food for thought.
Another interesting area of the Osaka plant is called Chi-No-Mori, where Daikin partners and working groups meet to present technologies to each other and share ideas for the development of new products in a co-design perspective.
The Daikin Discovery Hall is the museum that represents the history of the company, its management as well as the evolution of its products and technologies and that coexists closely with the laboratories where today the future successes of Daikin are built. Engineers from three different plants operate here with over 700 workstations.
