HIPPS

High-integrity pressure protection systems are used on gas pipelines, and are composed of two shut-off valves in series controlled by an extremely reliable electronic or hydraulic logic unit. If over-pressurization is identified, the valves are immediately closed, preventing the situation from propagating to the next stretch.
This allows optimisation of design pressure in the stretch of piping downstream of the protection system, and avoids emission of gas into the atmosphere with subsequent gas flare.
