The Current Situation of Refrigerant Gas Regulations

European regulations aim for climate neutrality by 2050, enforcing the reduction of emissions from high-impact environmental gases. Essentially, the European directive mandates, starting from 01-01-2027, the sale of chillers with the following characteristics:

- Chillers with nominal capacity > 12kW → refrigerant gases with GWP < 750

- Chillers with nominal capacity ≤ 12 kW → refrigerant gases with GWP < 150

Note that in the USA, starting from January 1, 2024, chillers filled with conventional refrigerants such as R410A, R407C, and R134a can no longer be imported. In Canada, this restriction will come into effect on January 1, 2025.

It's important to remember that GWP (Global Warming Potential) is the ratio of the global warming impact generated by 1 kg of refrigerant gas, relative to the same amount of CO2.

The demands from institutions for more sustainable solutions and the energy consumption due to the lower efficiency of using more "green" gases pose new challenges for industry operators. Daikin, the world’s only manufacturer that develops and manufactures both HVAC systems and refrigerantsis globally committed to finding the best possible solution. Since the beginning of the year, Daikin has started using R32 refrigerant with a GWP of 675 in its chillers, aiming to fully comply with European regulations by early 2027. Meanwhile, chillers with lower emissions compared to previous models are being introduced to the market.

What is R32?

R-32 is the most balanced refrigerant in terms of environmental impact, energy efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness.

What About the Future?

Daikin and Duplomatic, together with the EMEA network, are mobilizing to meet future stringent regulatory requirements for chillers. Multiple solution pathways are already being explored, with Daikin’s DNA focused on the best cost/benefit ratio in terms of both performance and sustainability.
