Hydraulics on board: naval applications

If one day it happens to you (or it has already happened) to leave for a nice holiday in Sardinia on board a ferry, travel relaxed and enjoy the beauties of nature! The ships are most likely equipped with Duplomatic MS hydraulic drives. Getting on board, weighing anchor and docking at the port of arrival will be child's play.

The presence of Duplomatic MS hydraulics in the naval sector has been going on for decades and includes dozens and dozens of applications both in the merchant marine field and in the civil one for the transport of passengers, ending up in the more sophisticated field of the military navy, with successes both in Italy and in other European countries.

On the other hand, the naval sector, together with the heavy mechanical industry, has contributed to a rapid development of hydraulic regulation components and techniques with the introduction of "load sensing" controls aimed at reducing energy dissipation in the circuits created for the control of large actuators, since both the flow rates and the pressures used take on significant values.

In the specific case of ferries, the hydraulic system is used to control the mooring winches and anchor windlass, the ramp and the sallet.

Each ferry is equipped with two identical hydraulic power plants, located at the stern and at the bow, and four control columns, two at the stern and two at the bow, powered in pairs by each single power plant.

Obviously, the hydraulic circuit studied jointly with naval designers has all the safety and redundancy conditions required for the specific application and supported by the approved testing by R.I.N.A.

In recent years Duplomatic MS has created complex hydraulic units to connect and disconnect FPSO vessels from mooring towers in off-shore applications. The main unit that manages the quick release of the ship from the pumping station has a length of 2.8 meters with a weight of over 10 tons and with a controlled flow rate over 16,000 l/min. The application required all IECEx certified components with IP56 degree of protection.

In this application, Duplomatic MS has complied with all the requirements expressed by the certifying body DNV, the world's leading company for classification and certification in the maritime sector.

Duplomatic MS has always been synonymous with continuity and innovation.
